Direct injection usually start a lot easier than indirect injection but for a diesel to start like that VW is almost unheard of. I would never have believed it if I wasn't right there. Maybe better glow plugs? The 3 cylinder Perkins in my tractor is good till about -18C or so using the thermo-start(glow plug). Below that I usually have to boost it and use just a small shot of ether. No, I don't use the thermo-start at the same time. The thermo-start only works when the the key is turned backwards. The older Perkins are OK to use ether on and some came with an ether system. Some engines, like Kubota, have very clear instructions to never use ether. I don't know about the newer Perkins. Dave

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
