Did you remove the pump from the engine or open up the timing gears in any way? That's the only way to get the pump out of time unless something broke, There is absolutely nothing you can do in the clutch housing or flywheel area to get anything out of time. The flywheel will only go on one way as the bolts are offset to insure correct installation. The timing marks in the pump will only line up when #1 cylinder is at 8 deg. BTDC. Remove the valve cover and watch the intake valve on #3 cylinder, in the normal direction of rotation turn the engine till #3 intake valve is closing then watch for the 8 deg. mark on the flywheel to line up with the roll pin in the bell housing opening. when it is, the lines in the pump window should be in perfect alignment. The failed ring in the pump is a possibility and you can verify that by removing the return line and fitting out of the top of the pump and trying to start it with the retun hole open. mEl
