That was a good observation. The government routinely subsidizes the airline industry by building airports and maintaining them along with providing air traffic control. The government subsidizes the trucking industry by building and maintaining the highway networks. The railways built and maintain their own network and pay property taxes on it. They provide their own traffic control services. One interesting thing that came to mind was the case of the Rock Island railroad. The Rock Island went bankrupt and was required by the federal government to continue to operate at a deficit for several years because it was in the public interest. They couldn't quit running until the federal government allowed them to. Now if we could get the federal government to force the oil and energy companies to operate at break even rates rather than making huge profits, and pass the savings along to consumers during these times of outrageous fuel costs we'd be doing something.
