Might as well face it. There will eventually be 2 coast to coast railroads and then everybody else. Rumor has it the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) is financially backing the Norfolk Southern (NS) who is floundering since acquiring 58% of Conrail. I feel that once the STB moratorium comes off in June those two will merge or at least attempt to. Only a matter of time until the UP and CSX do the same. I am a conductor for the NS and that is the word anyhow. The railroads turned there backs on the businesses that made them what they are today. On the other hand it is hard to be competitive when the federal govt funds the infrastructure for the competition. With all that in mind rail is still the cheapest way to get a large amount of "stuff" from here to there as long as time is not a huge factor. And let's not even start on grade crossing accidents. When the horn is blowing and ditch lights flashing that real estate between the signs, flashers, gates, etc, is ours and anyone caught "trespassing" is going to pay dearly.
