Sounds like you might be related to Jeremiah Johnson. I used to hunt with a 50 caliber Hawkin but it got stolen along with some others. I guess high speed verses carbide and cobalt is just a matter of taste. I've been a machinist for 40 years and I agree for harder tool steel and stainless, carbide works best but for mild steel like 1018 or 1020 cr, high speed tools will give you a better finish.
