The salters that go in a Reese hitch work fairly well for dry material and smaller quantities. 2 stage tail gaters can spread sand as well. New, single stage and 2 stage run from under a grand to around 2 grand. For $4000, you can have an 8' V box that sits in the bed of the truck and spread bulk salt/ sand. I've used both, and prefer the V box because I don't have to handle bagged product and can load between 2 and 3 ton per load. Look on E-Bay and your local Craig's List for used ones.
