I don't know about any Amish connection but as a gas heater combustion engineer this is my thoughts on these.
The heaters are not high tech just expensive. 1500 watts is 1500 watts. They just take the $25.00 Wal-Mart space heater and spread out the heating surface so no part gets as hot. Just more surface area to deliver the same 1500 watts.
You can heat just as well with your wife $10.00 hair dryer.
A few weeks ago I bought a small 20,000 BTU vent free gas fire place and put it in my house. My neighbors wife saw it and wanted one. He husband bought a 1400 watt electric fire place instead. He bought this since this generator would keep it going when the power goes off. My gas is 20,000 BTU's, 1400 watts equates to 4760 BTU's. My neighbors might be coming over to stay warm if the power goes off.
The electric fire place is the same as these heaters, might be nice to look at but pull 12.5 amps while running and will not keep a large room warm. I bet the power chord is the hottest part of the heater.
