Well, Sir, i was very young way back then, probably about ten or so. I hadn't had any formal training in the actual running or operation of autos, but, it did seem strange that every time his engine smoothed out, he had pressed down with the board under his foot. I think i was around 11 or 12, but us kids always spent a lot of time staying at the farm, with our Maternal Grand-parents. And, the high-light of that was the day we'd go to the big Butler Fair, out on Rt. 422, near Butler, Pa. Grampaw had a 1930 Chevy 4-door sedan, and we'd all pile in, with our picnic basket, and a dollar or two to spend, and away we'd go. It was about 15 miles to the fair grounds, and oh, the sights to see along the way, and back home again. And, the things to see and do at the Fair! To our eyes, it was as good or better than anything else! Except, maybe, the day the thrasher guy brought the big thrashing machine to the farm, to thrash the wheat and oats! (we and everybody called that wonderful machine a "Thrasher", a local name for the thresher, now called a separator, but our use of a separator was to get the cream out of the milk. Thanks fer the reply, and getting me educated! Rusty J.
