Ag, I'm sorry for your loss and the way you were notified.
Years ago, when I was in high school, I was coming home late and came upon a fatal accident. I recognized the car and stopped. The state cop could see that I knew the man who was killed. He asked me to accompany him to notify his family. We went to the home, and he made sure the widow had someone else there to comfort her, then as gently as possible, broke the sad news to her. That cop held this crying widow in his arms, with tears running down his face, doing all he could to comfort her. When we finally left and were back in his car, he turned to me and said, "Son, if there was ever anything to make you NOT want to be a cop, this is it."
I don't know what he could have done to make her situation any more bearable.
On the other side of the coin - a local lady got a phone call one morning asking what funeral home was going to pick up her son's body. He'd been killed in a car wreck a couple hours earlier.
