We didn't even put straw in the hole- just buried the heads upside down in the dirt, with root sticking up. It would be slimy about 2 leaves in- we took a knife to the garden to trim it in place. Hold it by the root, trim off bad leaves, then cut off root and take a nice head of cabbage in to mom. 'Course, that won't work if your ground freezes in winter- we are in the balmy Pacific Northwest. Also overwintered carrots, beets and parsnips by just not digging them until we needed them.
