generally the way a backfire takes place is for an intake valve to be open,or leaking when the spark occurs.if the engine runs then it cannot be far enough out of time to cause the backfire.if the firing order is correct and you have a good cap and wires then we have to look at the valves.this engine uses hydraulic lifters,one could be stuck( not collapsed)or you could have a weak valve spring,also as previously stated a sticky or gummed up valve.you may be able to find it by doing a compression test.another way to find it is to put air pressure into the cylinders and see if the valve leaks
