I was audited once, and it's not that bad. If you can document everything, you'll be OK. The gal that did the audit was friendly, congenial, and professional. I wound up owing a few more bucks, but it was no big deal. I had to agree with her.
Another guy I knew once was audited. He was so nervous, his wife had to drive to the audit. By the time they were done, the IRS owed him a refund.
I recently got a letter from the IRS stating that they had reviewed my 2004 and 2005 returns and found I'd overpaid. I didn't get a check, but the overpayments will be credited to future returns.
Just remember, the IRS agents are human, too. If you're sociable and cooperative, they'll most likely respond in kind. If you go in with an attitude and a chip on your shoulder, they'll probably respond likewise, also.
