Have you replaced the spark plugs? Old spark plugs get high resistance which makes them hard to fire which will sometimes cause cross fire in the distributor to a cylinder next to the one thats supposed to fire, that intake valve is still open and there isn't any compression in that cylinder yet which lets that spark plug fire easier than the plug thats supposed to fire which is under compression. Bad plug wires can cross fire, but normally a carbon tracked cap or dirty cap will cause your problem. If the cam gear has shelled the plastic teeth off and jumped timing that will cause the same problem, but when you get is started you can normally tell be the sound of the engine that the timing is off, also it will jump far enough off in a short time that it wont run at all and sound as though all the plugs are removed from the engine and it will blow gas and air out of the carb when you crank the engine.
