Believe it or not a bad cell in a battery will take out the alternator. The bad cell will create a "feed back" to the alternator and after a few days will smoke the alt. Had it happen to me twice, on 2 different trucks. The first time I had to buy the battery and the alt. The second time only cost me a battery because I new the simptoms.
