My memory is a little fuzzy but I am pretty sure there is only one mark on the cam pulley. The other pulley runs the distributor and has to be lined up also.
Pull the front plug and bump or turn the motor until it pops your thumb off so then you are coming up on #1. Turn it until the marks line up.
The motors I have seen free wheel so it shouldn't have any bent valves. If I had it in front of me I could time it.
