If a timing belt breaks,then you put it on and it wont start,bumping it to TDC wont work.You have to find out which mark on the crank and which mark on the cam.I think you line it up to a pointer maybe.You could still be half way off,or 180 degrees.Bumping it would only work if the timing belt,gear,chain was in place with nothing wrong with it when you started. As long as you can turn it over and not hurt anything you can line up the marks and turn it over with number one plug out and your finger in the hole.When it blows your finger out of the hole,check your marks.If they are lined up it should run,if not you will have to line them up.You can take a screwdriver and feel the top of the piston and get it right on TDC,then look at the timing marks on the harmonic balancer.If you have TDC marks on the harmonic balancer lined up,and your marks on the cam lined up,and on the compression stroke,it should run. If you have a distributor you can pull the cap and see if the rotor is pointing to the number one plug.If it is,and all the marks are lined up,and on the compression stroke,it should run.
