Your VAC can be converted to 12 volts rather simply. Change all light bulbs to 12 volt. Replaced the cutout relay on the top of the generator with a 12 volt one or go to a solid state diode and either get a 12 volt coil or a dropping resistor for the distributor. No alternator is needed as the generator will charge 12 volts if it is exicited to do so. The existing cutout relay will fry at 12 volts. I obtained a 40 amp diode and installed it in place of the cutout. The reason the cutout is needed is to disconnect the generator from the battery when the engine is not running. It is really an electrically operated switch. If you would remember to do it manually it could be done. Your VAC uses the light switch to control the charge rate and so you do not have a regulator to worry about. My 1951 VAC was converted in 1979 and has performed super ever since. Be sure to keep the engine in good tune as the starter should not be engaged for more than a few seconds as it is seeing 4 times the power it was designed to handle. Double voltage causes double current hence 4 times the watts. Extra watts equal extra heat. Hope this helps
