Probably a stupid question from new operator

I recently purchased an 1986 Ford 655 loader backhoe and have never operated a backhoe before. I bought it to do some ditching around the farm and was wondering if I could dig the ditch from the side and pile it behind the backhoe. This would make it possible to have a nice round ditch by just driving beside it. Is there too much stress on the outrigger to do this. Every backhoe I have ever seen operating dug from the back, just wondering if there is a reason I should not dig from the side. Thanks in advance…..
