Have to remember history of 1700s. England at times restricted Catholics from having arms in Ireland, sometimes protestants were restricted in England. The state religion would educate some children, keep records and collect money as a state approved tax from everybody in county or parish to cover expenses- even if some were not of state religion. If a person wasn"t on church rolls with marriage recorded- on death of man widow wouldn"t inheirit property, usually the state and church split it as no valid heirs to claim, children hoping to inheirit were bastards. The Scots court or house of lords judges for long time couldn"t be Catholics, was only in about 2000 when House of lords was trimmed that the appeals judges could be other than Church of England or Presperterian. This was English law reform, couple other posts also had religion restriction. Lutheran church in some countries does primary education and some record keeping- Wisconsi State Journal reporter Hesslebrod notes in his trips to Norway to visit old family that Lutheran schools recieve about 70% of operating cost and teacher salary from government and school tax goes mostly to them. England pays similar amounts to Catholic schools in Northern Ireland. Constitution say can"t do that, no religious restrictions or oaths for elected or appointed officials. At same time state can"t restrict rights of citizen based on religion- as in ownership of property, jobs/occupation/trade or possesing arms as had happened in England. As for Gunsights? Tritijon sights used by military had a couple bible references- chapter/verse numbers - and military has a written policy of no prostelizing, picky politicians and some aggravating anti religious activists lawyers got verses taken off on new orders for military- made it part of MilSpec purchase order. Current issue sights may have verses scrubbed off, kit has been supplied to do that--kicker is a personal use/purchased sight will not be ordered to be scrubbed, that would interfere with the troopers right of religious expression not related to his performandce of duty and his authorized personel property. Some Marines have stated they will not erase markings for their current issued sights as it is a morale issue. Potential Islamic objections are irrelavant to good order and perforance of duty to kill trouble makers who happen to be muslims. RN
