Water injection does not increase octane and it does not increase compression. It works by cooling the incoming air/fuel charge to prevent detonation. Whenever water turns from liquid to vapor, the temperature drops and when you have the temperature drop, you have less chance of detonation. One way to visually see this as a human is to have somebody take an alcohol-soaked washcloth and rub this on your back. As the alcohol quickly evaporates, your back feels cold.
