Hi Charger, A head gasket can be made from a sheet of soft copper. The mating parts must be very flat and should not have too smooth a finish. Without sealant they sometimes tend to leak around water passages. For some applications a solid copper gasket is better than a low quality composition gasket, but at the same time, never better than a high quality composition gasket. Making a copper head gasket is a fair amount of work, and will likely not be as good as a production gasket. That being the case I'd make every effort to find store bought gaskets.
