Question about checking hydraulic pressure

Is there a trick to checking the pressure of the hydraulic pump? I put a gauge on the end of the hose that goes to my 3-pt "up" side of the cylinder. I eased the "up" hydralic lever and immediately the pressure shot to 1800. My pressure should be at about 1000 psi before the relief valve kicks in.I stopped immediately, as I don't want to blow the pump. I'm quite sure the relief valve, seat, spring etc are correctly installed. I just wonder if my method for doing this check is correct. I'm using a good quality (oil filled) guage. Unfortunately I do not have access to a flow rater. I just replaced the pump on my Oliver Super 88, the latter having blown, perhaps to excessive pressure, and want to make sure that I don't destroy another. Any thoughts are appreciated Stan(Mo)
