This advise is from a Dairy farmer, beef cattle may be different. O.B. chains and hooks handy to pull if needed. colostrun in the first hour, eather nursing or bottle. beware of the cow getting protective, only intervine when necessary. A stout rope to tie the cow if needed for treeatment.
check the cow for cold ears. a sign of milk fever (more likley in dairy cattle) have oral/ I.V. calcium on hand for this, I always follow a calciun treatment with a 25cc shot of hy-phos. a hiball shot of 5cc lytalyse with 2cc oxytocin IMEDIATLY after calfing will aid in preventing retained palcenta. To warm a cold calf with out heat lamps, cover the calf with gunny sacks, (leave the nose stick out) then cover with a foot of long, lose, clean straw, the calfs body heat will warm him fast. (Gramps old trick before thay had lights)
