Well...it's difficult to diagnose something like this at a distance, so who's to say how close to "the end" the old girl is?! H and M engines are so rugged, that they'll sometimes start easily, run smoothly, and pull pretty well right up to the point where there isn't much life left. I'd be surprised if an oil change, even to a heavier SAE # would stop the smoking for long, but only time will tell. If I were you, I'd stay away from a multigrade oil in this engine. 10W30 or 10W40 oil can be used in these old engines with reasonable success if you aren't working them hard, and the lower viscosity WILL help them turn over and start easier in cold weather, but straight SAE 30 was what they were designed for. I'd suggest you check the oil level FREQUENTLY in that tractor! If it runs out the top petcock on the oil pan, it's full. If it won't run out the bottom one, it needs oil. The harder you work it, the faster you run it, and the warmer the engine gets, the more oil it will use. Good luck!
