There is a button on the front of the VCR / DVD player ( could also be on the remote ) that lets you select wheather or not you want to use the DVD player or VCR function . There is usually a LED that shows you which function is selected , it is usually above or below the button or switch or on the machines display screen , if it has one. I have operated two that have this function and they all should have it. If the DVD part is working , then make sure that the function switch is moved over to the VCR function. If this dosen't fix your problem , then you may have to use a different hook up ( connection ) method such as S - Video or RCA cables or some other way of connection. The reason there is no tuner in the VCR / DVD player is because of the invention of S Video cables , etc., which is a much better hook up the coaxial cables . This way you also need to buy an external TV Tuner ( as it said in the instruction manual that I read on one ) to hook up the player the old fashioned way with coaxial cables so that the signal will go through the player.
