Your best bet is hooking up a converter box with either of the VHS units.
Turn the converter box on to the channel you want to record, be sure you have locked out the 'power down' feature most of them have that turns them off in 4 hours, and let it be.
Tell the analog VCR to record whatever channel the box outputs to (3 or 3) at the time the show will come on. Or hook the new tunerless VCR up to the outputs of the converter box & have it record that source at the right time.
You should be able to get both the DVD & VCR to work with the TV you have. I'm a hands on person, can't describe what to try in text. But - it should work. Like the other person said, if the DVD is working, you should just hit a button to switch the unit to the other 1/2, so the VCR is the active unit?
