I"m not sure this one can be laid just to greed... My personal opinion/guesstimate is that something in the electronics occasionally interacts in a completely unexpected way that"s not covered in the manuals or by the theory, something that"s very difficult, if not impossible to duplicate at will... Here in the US, fears of economic loss (lawsuits, etc) and personal prestige lead to cover-ups. Frankly, I"m surprised the head of the company hasn"t already resigned and retired from corporate or public life for bringing shame upon his family, the Company and Japan as a Country. In earlier times, in Japan, there was only one honorable way to atone. Greed was a factor, of course, but the enormity of accepting blame in such a situation probably delayed public acknowledgement, which is not to say they didn"t have people trying to find the problem.
