I'm pretty sure an 034 is maybe 10-20 years old, and is a "professional" duty saw. In response to customer demand, some of the new Stihl's are "homeowner" duty saws. Their literature will tell you, but the way to know on NEW Stihl's is the price range. Saws under $280 or so are homeowner saws, and from about $280 to $400 are ""mid-range"--it takes closer to $500 on up to get something of the quality of the 034 you are looking at. (prices are just educated guesses--I don't have a price sheet in front of me)
So, if the 034 is is "slightly used" (meaning really nice) condition and has some extra chains, maybe a nice case, and some oil with it, AND it runs out nice, I'd get it WAY WAY before I bought a cheap little piece of junk new for the same money.
I have 3-028's and they all run as good as when they were new. I bought them new in the mid 1990's, I think. One has wore out several bars and sprockets. About all I ever have to do is clean a screen behind where the exhaust exits. It will plug with carbon and cause the saw to run poorly. Clean the screen and the saw is always good as new.
I was looking at a new 270, and my dealer said that it was no where near as good as my old 028's.

Minus two kids, we traveled light with only the youngest in tow. As long as a pool was at the end of our destination she was easy to please unlike the other two who have a multitude of requirements to travel with mom and dad. Amana Colonies served as a respite where we ate a family style lunch that sustained us with more food than could reasonably fit into our ample physiques. The show at Ankeny
