We've got a solar-powered cabin in that area, but more towards Blue Mountain Lake where's it's a litle less crowded in the summmer.
My grandmother came though Ellis Island in 1912 and got sent to live in the Old Forge-Eagle Bay area. Part of the trip was by Adirondack steamboat. Years later, I found that cabin you can see in these 1912 photos and I stripped it just before it got torn down. The color photo is what I found, just as it was being torn down.
Kind of hard now to envision what it was like to have to travel there by horse-drawn wagon and steamboat. Especially for my grandma who didn't speak any English and came from a rural farmining area of southern France. Three women and two little kids were sent there to live all summer.
One girl that worked with my grandma later changed her name and became the famous movie actress Claudette Colbert. The little boy in one photo later became a famous Naval commander in WWII.
