While I remember the first pay being very small along the lines of $50 I don't think it was for a full month because the next few pays were just below $80. Drafted in July '66.
Got out in '68 and I tend to recall I was getting $180+ per month. Had been put in for E-5 but no allocations that month so stayed at E-4. Screw up on the paperwork and I was paid as an E-5 which was just over $200 so made sure it was adjusted the next month.
My Social Security earnings record shows I received $1740 for the year of 1967. Would have been at different ranks so not a true per month reflection.
Not long after I got out there was a big boost in pay as I recall from friends letters. Still glad I didn't opt to stay in until retirement. Civilian job started me off at $500 per month which is a lot different than military pay.
