Around 1960 I worked at an orchard hauling in the crates of picked apples. One of the tractors was a Allis B with only the hand crank. Sometimes when cranking if it didn't start it would back fire and turn over backwards. This would throw out a little of the oil from the air cleaner and it would land on the hood. We named it oily and the name stuck. We had a fairly large two wheel trailer to haul the crates of apples and this would put quite a bit of weight on the rear wheels of the tractor. The orchards were hilly and this weight would help to pull the loads out of the orchard. Many times we would come up the hill with both front wheels in the air and steer with the brakes. Back then that was fun and all in a days work. The large tractor that we had back then was a grey 35 Ferguson. The boss used that to pull the sprayer around and I used it with a rotary mower to cut up all of the pruning brush after we put it in windrows. Talk about having to keep your head low to keep from getting hit with the larger pieces. There was one guy that could really throw an apple. He would be throwing them at me over the hill even after I was out of sight, so I had to keep looking back to avoid getting hit. I kind of miss those days.

Today's Featured Article - 12-Volt Conversions for 4-Cylinder Ford 2000 & 4000 Tractors - by Tommy Duvall. After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
