Drafted in March, 1943, went to Durham, NC, to Camp Butner. Spent about 9 months there for specialised training on land mines, booby traps, all kinds of nasty explosives. Was on Tennessee maneuvers in March of 1944, after that, went to Camp Pickett, got furlough home, then off to New Jersey, for a month. And then onto a troop ship to England. Two weeks later, in July, went into France near St. Lo, and into action several days later. Was put into the 90th. Division, Infantry. From there, we walked all the way up past Paris, LeMans, Mayenne, all in France. Finally got to Metz in France, near german border. Was captured by the Germans, but my captors all got killed or wounded by one of their anti-personnel mines that had been set up by their front man! I was hit bad, too. I made my escape from that situation, but not without some problems. Our medics found me and my buddy next morning, and we got sent back to hospital. And that ended my army career, as they had to remove my left foot due to injuries from the land mine. I'm still stomping along, and have no regrets. In fact, aside from my loss, i enjoyed my trip across the "Pond"!
