Keeps them together and warm. Where does the dog stay (inside, outside)? If inside with a decent temp and no cold drafts just a frame a foot or so high will do it. You can google e whelping box and spend bunches of money.
We use an 80x120 cm pallet frame about 8 inches tall and plenty of straw. As soon as the babies start getting out, we just get rid of the frame.
