I have a 6 foot Howse mower purchased from Northern about 6 years ago. I have the shear pin type and it is just fine. I have never sheared a pin with it so I guess the clutch would have been a waste of money. I have hit rocks with it and it dulls the blades and bounces over them. A friend of mine had a 5 footer behind a 640 ford. He did not have a shear pin or clutch on his. Since he also does not have live pto there is no clutch to protect the engine. He hit a stump and broke the crank in the engine. Moral is to have one or the other, clutch or shear pin, and not to go without.
