I remember those winters from late fall 1979 to 1985 - thought they'd be the worst years of my life. While I was in junior high and high school with a few older brothers we went though the same mess on a daily basis with the same fustration - only our dad wasn't there to give a guiding hand.
On top of the worst economic mess in 50 years that would tear apart families under the best of circustances he picked that time to get sick with cancer and he lingered on for 5 years still trying to run farm while losing his hair, his hearing and eventually the will to go on. That left 12 year olds driving grain trucks and 18 year olds making credit arrangements with the COOP, fist fights over the "right way" to do things and arguements that can flare up 30 years later like it was yesterday. He never took out bankruptcy but "gave it all back" to the bank then died a few weeks later leaving a wife to take care of three kids ranging from 7 to 14, I had just turned 17 and was grouped with the "older kids" and was on my own.
What I know now is that those hard times prepared me for the really tough times I'd face 20 years later.
