You say you had a cracked head. Like someone below, I'd also be concerned about coolant getting into the oil and taking out the bearings.
I was working in the parts department at a Ford dealership when Ford came out with the head gasket recall on the 3.8 V6's. The first repair was strictly a head gasket replacement, after cleaning the head and block surfaces [often with the heads being resurfaced, if there had been any warpage] and a total fluid change...and 9 times out of 10, engines that weren't knocking when they came in with bad head gaskets would begin knocking after the head gasket replacement. These cars then would get a replacement engine, and the bearing damage was caused by coolant getting into the oil...and I'm not talking about a gallon, or even a quart of coolant in the oil.
The other side of the coin is that I recall Pappy and Grand-dad doing a valve job on a private contractor's mail truck with a small block Ford V8. The engine had well over 200,000 miles on it, and Pappy had tried to steer the customer towards a full overhaul. But he was not in a position to pay or anything more than the valve job [this was in the mid-1970's,and the way gas prices had risen, he'd ended up bidding the job WAY too cheap]. So it was agreed that Pappy and Grand-dad would do the valve job, and there was NO WARRANTY on that engine afterwards. Within 30 days [they were running the mail 7 days a week then], that engine was smoking like he was fogging for mosquitoes. The lack of compression leaks on the top side had put more pressure on the piston rings, and since they were already weak, they failed.
Not saying any of this will happen to you...but by rolling the dice, are you prepared, financially AND mentally, if you lose your bet and have to tear it all back down and do it "right" ??It's YOUR tractor, and you have every right to do whatever you want with it. Just be aware of possible consequences. Not EVERY bank robber goes to jail; that's why some folks take the risk. Sometimes someone gets lucky...and in the case of this engine, you may be one of the lucky ones. It's your tractor, your time, and your money.

Today's Featured Article - A Cautionary Tale - by Ian Minshull. In the early 1950s my father bought an Allis Chalmers B and I used it for all the row crop work with the mangolds and potatoes, rolling and the haymaking on our farm. The farm and the Allis were sold and I have spent a lifetime working on farms throughout the country. I promised myself that one day I would own an Allis. That time event
