Like some other posts suggest when the subject of money comes up and the pay offered isn't what the person wants then they should respectfully tell the person doing the interview that there isn't any reason to continue. On some occasions the person offering the job may be willing to throw a little more into the pot for the pay but in the case your talking about where the person is wanting $12 an hour for a job paying $8 an hour I can pretty much guarantee you that an increase of that size simply AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN.
Personally I've always known the pay offered at every place I was applying to before hand, except in one instance. In that case they advertised saying they wanted a plant maintenance man. That's what I did atthe time so I went in and applied. Typically maintenance was paying in the $10-$13 an hour range at the time. Once I got to the interview we talked and walked around the plant. In the course of that tour I was told that they contracted out all of the "major" maintenance and basically paid through the nose for the contractors both momnitarily as well as in downtime waiting for the other outfits to get there. I told the guy that I could easily take care of all the stuff inhouse that they were currently paying others to do and save them some serious money but that I was asking $13 an hour. Saddly they were set in their ways and all they wanted was to pay someone minimum wage ($6 something an hour back then I believe) to do things like change light bulbs, etc. Needless to say I turned that job down cold.
