Hi Joe, I've tried painting various decals with different kinds of clears and have never had good results. Either the decal is attacked by the clear, or the clear begins to lift after a short period of time. However, I know it is possible to paint vinyl. There is a company in my area does a lot of vinyl graphics for race cars, fancy semi trailers, prototypes, etc. They sometimes paint their vinyl for different effects. Since they are using paint, I assume the same material would also be available in clear. Unfortunately they are very protective of their methods, and have been careful to avoid letting me know what they are doing. I have run across a number of consumer products that have clear-coated decals. But again, I can't tell you what the decals are made of, or what type of clear was used. I stripped a bicycle frame that had clear-coated decals. It took lots of the most powerful stripper to even soften it up, so it must have been some kind of urethane, epoxy, or?. All I can tell you with authority is that it can be done. The information is out there, all you have to do is find it. Good luck...Al English
