As has been mentioned, compacting the fill makes a big difference. Best way is LOTS of water, and a bit of time, followed up by mechanical compactors. If you are served by a volunteer fire dept. a donation will usually provide you with all the water you will need to SOAK anything that is not native soil. Then let it sit a few weeks or so. If the fill is deep a second soak might be a good thing. Don't be surprised if after one or two soaks you need to add a bit of fill to bring it to grade. This is good, better to get it to settle now, before you pour. Lots of good advise on this board on the pour itself. You might hit the library and or the local high school (building trades ) for some good texts on concrete. Concrete is one thing which has been well studied by the engineers, and there is a LOT of information out there. It is not hard to get it right but it is real easy to get it wrong.
