Some years back I went to a dealer service school on 71 series Detroits. The question of why truckers leave engines idling in the summer at truck stops came up. One guy, who was a mechanic at a local trucking company, said that it gets done to keep the cab cool...keep the air conditioning running. Not being a driver, he said this somewhat disdainfully. The instructor said that in general it's best not to idle diesels for any great length of time. Later in the course we were shown how when a diesel idles for any length of time, it's possible to put your bare hand on the exhaust manifold. The very lean fuel air ratio does not promote "slobber" from unburned fuel to get consumed. Letting a hot engine idle for a few minutes before shutting it down is a good idea.
