Pharmaceuticals: Why can you go to Canada (or several Western European countries) and buy a medication for a fraction of the U.S. price? Because the Canadian government negotiated a lower cost. I think the prices whould be lowered for us, a little higher for the other countries - "fair" is what I mean. We are paying for the development of new drugs, and the rest of the world benefits. Level the playing field.
I'm not a "world traveler", but I was in Norway back in 1999 on business. They have socialized health care. I asked my collegues how they liked it. "We think it's very good" they said. No lines, no waiting, good service. How is it paid for? Their "value-added tax" (VAT) - which is basically a tax on consumption.
I like that idea - a tax on consumption. Really feel you need that big-screen TV? Well, you'll pay the tax, then. Can you get along with a smaller, less expensive model? You'll pay less tax.
The money does have to come from somehwere. No getting around it. There is no magic solution. Cutting costs would be the first place to start, then think about how to pay for it.
