It may be crude, but the way my Dad and I time engines with a magneto is to stick a heavy wire in the No.1 spark plug hole to feel the piston moving up, and listen for when the impulse trips (or watch for the spark on a plug on the No.1 wire). First determine which terminal on the mag you will use for no.1 cylinder (it doesn't really matter which one you choose; it's just the point to start counting from). Then determine top-dead-center for the no.1 cylinder on the power stroke. To tell which is the power stroke, hold your thumb over the sparkplug hole while another person slowly cranks the engine over until you feel the pressure escaping. Then stick in the wire to feel for the piston reaching the top and just starting to move down. If you set the timing so that the impulse trips just as you feel the piston start to go back down, the spark will be as advanced as much as possible without kicking back when cranking. If the mag matches the engine, the built-in impulse lag should have it firing close to the correct number of degrees before TDC once the impulse releases. For the rest of the cylinders, just attach the wires in order from the no.1 terminal (be sure you check which way the rotor turns). Most 4 cyl engines use a 1-4-3-2 firing order.
