The present coil connection may show the side of the battery grounded. If it was done right, the battery posts and cable connectors will fit neatly, not one way too big and the other too small. If it has a car alternator its almost sure to be negative ground. Then a simple check is for ammeter polarity. Hook up a battery. Turn on the lights. If it shows discharge the ammeter and battery polarity agree. Then check the coil. And before you start it and it has a generator, be sure to polarize the generator so it matches the battery.
