I thought he was hiding out at my place last night. Saw him run under the granary so I set a live trap with some cat food in it. Today I went over to check and sure enough there he is. Only thing is I had my shotgun along instead of a 22. Didn't want to blow a hole in my trap so I let him loose so I could get a clear shot. The bugger took off so fast to the left I didn't expect that and I missed. Now he's headed for my SUV and I don't dare shoot. He's got no place to run for cover so crawls up the tire and into the engine compartment. The motor is running mind you but thankfully the doors were shut so at least he wasn't inside the vehicle. About the time I thought I'm going to have to open the hood he climbed back out and proceeded to the rear of my vehicle and up onto the spare tire. Now suppers waiting and I told the misses I'd be back in a flash, just need to check this trap, but now we're looking at a waiting game I didn't have the patience for. So I put her in drive and headed for the road to see if I could shake him loose. Next thing I know he's in my rear view headed back to the buildings. I grabbed my shot gun and ran after him. Boy can a coon run! I need to get back into shape. I'm thinking I'm close enough to shoot but I've got my buildings and fuel tanks just ahead of the coon. He goes around the corner of the building with me hot on his trail. He's scrambling over the snow banks and I blast him. He keeps going and I think my swather got peppered. I scramble over the snow banks after him. Did you know a coon can run over soft snow and only sink in a few inches? I was trudging up to my knees. My boots are now full of snow down to my ankles as my pant legs were on the inside. I'm also sucking air like a grain vac. I gotta get into shape. He's about to turn another corner so I blast him again. I'll have to inspect the damage to my auger wagon later. This is getting serious. I know I've got one shot left so it's time to do this right. Onward before he gets away! I round the next corner and just about stepped on him. Funny how they act like they never got touched and then just keel over. Thank goodness as I didn't have any endurance for another trip around the building. I gotta get back into shape. Worse part is if there's one coon living inder the granary then theres likely 3 or 4 more. I reset the trap. Tomorrow I'm bringing the 22 and the door stays shut til he's dead.
