When approaching them about buying the M, be sure you don't insult him. The tractor is worth what the buyer and seller agree on the selling price. Some people (like me) can get insulted easily when in a bad mood and someone thinks they have you by the short hairs because a situation...whether monetary, time, space or whatever can make a decision real quick.

I'm not a salseman, and have watched more than one potential buyer walk away from my product. Won't go into any long stories other than the most recent. I got to So. Korea in Nov 09. I bought a 92 Mazda 929 in Dec 09. Less than 125K miles, a fresh fluids change, almost new tires, and fresh tuneup for $1,400. When I found out I would have to pay to ship it back to the states when I came back in Nov 09, made my decision to sell it. Seems there weren't as many people needing/wanting to buy a car when I went to sell it as when I had bought it after getting there. Was trying to sell the car for $1,000 and had no offers. This is after one person asked me not to sell it to anyone but him. When I told him how much I wanted for it, he decided he didn't want the car. Another guy told me it was only worth $200 and that he would buy it for that if I paid the transfers of title, reg, etc. After I heard this I decided that before I would sell it to them or for $200 I would pay the $75 dollar equivelant and have it junked. This is good looking car and road worthy to travel anywhere on the Peninsula. One guy, when he heard I was leaving and need to dispose of the car, asked/offered if I would give him the car, that he didn't think he should have to buy it since I had to get rid of it in order to clear my checklist in order to final out and leave.

I did sell the car. Made a deal with a young NCO that had just managed to bring his wife and three children over and was living off base. We made a deal for less than $1,000 (sold it to him for $700) and I had use of car until I got on the bus to go to the airport.

How you approach the person may make the decision on how they respond to your offer. Hopefully for you he's not a moody person like I have been known to be. But it always seems I have to pay premium for what I want and need, and am lucky if I get anything for it if/when I sell. As a result that can make a person go on the defensive side real quick.

Good Luck with the purchase of the M and the resoration on it. I'm sure you will get many years of use out of it.

Today's Featured Article - Timing Your Magneto Ignition Tractor - by Chris Pratt. If you have done major engine work or restored your tractor, chances are you removed the magneto and spark plug wires and eventually reached the point where you had to put it all back together and make it run. On our first cosmetic restoration, not having a manual, we carefully marked the wires, taped the magneto in the position it came off, and were careful not to turn the engine over while we had these components off. We thought we could get by with this since the engine ran perfectly and would not need any internal work. After the cleanup and painting was done, we began reassembly and finally came to t ...
