Old, Best Of Luck to your son. Hope his time (whether an enlistment or a life time career) turns out well for him. Hope he enjoys his (well deserved) time off. RAP (Recruiter Assistance Program) is non-chargeable leave. Most of the kids I've talked with got a lot of time off. Basicly, he's at home, meets with the recruiter, talks with people that are getting ready to come in the service, and spends a lot of time visiting with family and freinds. My personal opinion (and we all know everyone has one) instead of recruits doing this right after boot camp or tech school...should wait and have them do this after about six months at thier first duty station. This would give them a better/broader scope and larger wealth of knowlege to talk with the newbies.
I'm Air Force, so I can't speak for the Navy. But if you were to tour a Naval Installation...would be very surprised about the changes in the quality of life. I'm still active duty, and in my 24 plus years it's WOW. The young Airmen have so many more amenities and opportunities. Not Saying It's A Bad Thing. It's nice, and the off-duty educational opportunities (once they complete thier upgrade training requirements) is great.
Let me know how things turn out with the baggage and the recruiter. While in the shirt office (was an assistant First Sergeant about ten months at a prior base) I spoke with a few of the recruiters trying to get the specifics and etc straight due to some of the Airman not getting the proper paperwork completed in order to do the RAP Duty and they were about to get charged for leave time.
