While the speed & efficiency is less there is a safety aspect of keeping the fire outside of the building & pumping hot water. As a kid I extingushed a fire spread from a wood furnace into Grandpa's chainsaw gas can, rubber boots & a picnic table. Like most shops there was stuff crammed in/around everywhere.Of course the extingushers were outdated & unserviced. The 3rd one finally worked, then overhauled with water. In hindsite should have just called the fire dept & stood back. No use risking being a dead hero saving a shed. Waste lube oil contains lead, cadnium & many other nasty organic chemicals. Even few parts per million in the air or handling the combustion by product isn't for us. My next shop/house is going to have a oil/wood furnace but in it's own sealed insulated room lined with double drywall & equiped with sprinklers.
