Case and some other engine makers used multiple 2 cylinder head assemblies- Moline also had some I think. 2 of them for a 4 cylinder 3 for a 6 cilinder. Blocks were multiples of 2 also, spacing between blocks seperate from crankcase allowed mainbearings clearance. Crankcase one casting, blocks another casting, heads another casting. This meant use of smaller molds practical. Machining of certain parts- as drilling oil passages in crankcase easier. Parts replacement also easier at times- a freezed cracked cylinder block assembly on a big 6 meant only 2 cylinders worth needed replacing instead of new base block with case and all cylinders- think of old VW beetle flat 4 type 1 and 2 engines compared to a VW Rabbit. Weight total would be higher- but servicability would be greater in field or shop outside factory.
