I tried for quite awhile on my F12 to lock out the pawl of the magneto before I realized there wasn't one. You are the first I have heard with a similar story. I'm sure Paul (F14) will give you the scoop on timing details, but yes, I just ignored the part about the impulse pawl, set the flywheel to tdc 1-4, then mounted the mag so that the rotor was pointing at spark plug 1. I didn't have to readjust the mag coupler to the drive, but if you do, then setting the mag to where the points are just ready to open and the rotor pointed to spark plug one is even better. Actually, the first time I set timing, I couldn't even see the flywheel for the crud and I set timing by feeling the piston with my little finger through the sparkplug hole and cranked slowly until it got to tdc of the compression stroke. Timing to get an F12 to run is not critical. Timing it right is a little tougher but not hard either.
