I think it's safe to say that I'm the only one here who walks through the downtown Detroit neighborhoods several times a week. And I've spent a fair amount of time driving through various parts of Detroit, although there are some areas I stay clear of. There's one thing very obvious when you travel around the city: it's nearly deserted. More like a ghost town than a city. Over half the population has left. There are huge parcels of land throughout the city that are vacant. Other areas have more vacant homes than occupied ones. And in many of the occupied houses, the occupants are squatters: drug dealers, drug users and prostitutes.
So, I ask you, what would you do with this city? It's obvious the population will not return in our lifetimes. The vacant houses have to be bulldozed, and the vacant land needs to be put to use. A million bucks is a drop in the bucket compared to what it would take to clean up this city, let alone rebuild it.
